Doctoral Studies at Freie Universitaet Berlin –
a Leading German Research University
For the year 2012 Freie Universitaet Berlin will
continue its privileged cooperation with the CSC and
is offering an important number of open positions in
a variety of research areas for CSC candidates
again.
The following information is addressed to qualified
Chinese students who wish to apply for a CSC
scholarship program for PhD studies abroad in March
2012.
For information about the eligibility criteria of the China
Scholarship Council, please carefully read
the CSC information material, which is available
online at www.csc.edu.cn.

Universitaet Berlin and the China Scholarship
Council (CSC) are cooperating since 2008 for the
purpose of providing high quality research training
to doctoral students from major Chinese
universities. The aim of this cooperation is also to
further develop education and research
collaborations between Freie Universitaet Berlin and
major Chinese universities. The program includes all
fields of studies at Freie Universitaet Berlin.
In 2010 a total of 50 and in 2011 a total of 45 CSC
scholarship holders chose Freie Universitaet Berlin
as destination for their research stay abroad.
This makes Freie Universitaet the by far most
important host institution for CSC scholarship
holders in Germany and one of the top CSC partner
universities worldwide.
Besides of having the chance to perform their
doctoral studies at a top German research
university, CSC scholarship holders can benefit of a
number of additional offers by Freie Universitaet.

Candidates 2012
The offer of Freie Universitaet Berlin consists of
two possibilities:
The two possibilities correspond to two different
ways to perfom PhD studies. Please read the section

PhD studies within
a structured program
CSC candidates can apply for admission to one of the
structured PhD programs at Freie Universitaet
Berlin. At present, about 30 individual programs -
Graduate Schools, Research Training Groups -
are offered in a wide variety of fields.
Most of the programs are in interdisciplinary
research areas. Structured PhD programs are a
mixture of some course work and individual research
for the PhD dissertation. In most cases supervision
of PhD students is achieved by more than one
professor.

PhD studies under
direct supervision of an individual professor
Generally speaking, each professor of Freie
Universitaet Berlin can supervise PhD students. This
is the traditional way of doing a doctorate in
Germany and is also called the 'apprentice model'.
The apprentice model is a 'research only' way to do
a doctorate. There is no compulsory curriculum.
At Freie Universitaet Berlin currently the vast
majority of German and international PhD students
perform their doctorate following this model.

Two Different Scholarship Schemes for Your PhD
Studies at Freie Universitaet Berlin
CSC candidates can perform PhD studies at Freie
Universitaet under two different scholarship
schemes. For full information refer to the CSC
website at www.csc.edu.cn.
If not stated otherwise all open positions are
suitable both, for PhD studies following Scheme 1 or
Scheme 2.

Scholarships
for a PhD project pursued at Freie
Universitaet Berlin only and leading to a
doctoral degree of Freie Universitaet
Duration of the scholarship: Three to four
years.
Scholarship holders under Scheme 1 will
enrol at Freie Universitaet Berlin as
doctoral students. Their research will be
supervised by a professor of Freie
Universitaet.
If the students successfully complete all
requirements and defend their dissertation,
they will be conferred a doctoral degree of
Freie Universitaet Berlin

| Scheme 2 |
Scholarships
for a doctoral program following the
so-called Sandwich Model
Duration of the scholarship: One to two
years.
Under the Sandwich Model a Chinese PhD
candidate will do PhD research both at the
home university in China and at Freie
Universitaet Berlin.
Supervision of the PhD candidate is ensured
by a Chinese and a German professor.
The first year of the PhD course will be
pursued at the Chinese university. The PhD
students then complete one to two years of
research at Freie Universitaet Berlin and
return to China for project completion.
The PhD title will ultimately be conferred
by the Chinese university. |

Language Requirements
The language of instruction will be English or
German, depending on the discipline and the subject
of the thesis.
Excellent language skills are required in the
language of instruction.
Language requirements also vary depending on the
scholarship scheme of PhD studies.
For individual doctoral positions exceptions from
the rule presented here may apply. Please consult
the information given for each doctoral position.
English as language
of instruction
In the following disciplines as a rule the language
of instruction for PhD studies can be English and no
prior knowledge of German is required:
Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy,
Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science,
Medicine, Physics, Veterinary Medicine.
German
as language of instruction
In the following disciplines the language of
instruction for PhD studies as a rule will be
foremost German:
Business Administration, Economics, Education,
Psychology, History, Cultural Studies, Law,
Philosophy, Political Science, Social
Sciences.
In some cases English is possible, depending on the
thesis subject and on the approval of the thesis
supervisor.

Tuition Fees
For doctoral studies at Freie Universitaet Berlin no
tuition fee is charged.

Application Procedure for PhD Studies at Freie
Universitaet Berlin
In order to become a PhD student at Freie
Universitaet Berlin in 2010, two applications
are required:
- Apply to Freie Universitaet
Berlin Beijing Office with the aim of getting a
qualifying letter of invitation for doctoral
studies at Freie Universitaet Berlin.
Deadline:
31 January 2012.
For the list of documents Freie Universitaet
Berlin is requiring from applicants, see here.
Successful candidates will be granted a letter
of invitation for doctoral studies at Freie
Universitaet Berlin. This letter is required for
the scholarship application to CSC.
- If you are successful in step 1, i.e. if you
are granted a letter of invitation for doctoral
studies at Freie Universitaet Berlin, you will
still need to apply for a CSC scholarship.
Deadline:
20 March 2012.
