The Offer of Freie Universitaet Berlin for CSC Candidates 2012

The offer of Freie Universitaet Berlin consists of two possibilities:
  • PhD studies within a structured program

  • The two possibilities correspond to two different ways to perfom PhD studies. Please read the section on General Information About PhD Studies at Freie Universitaet Berlin for details.

PhD studies within a structured program
CSC candidates can apply for admission to one of the structured PhD programs at Freie Universitaet Berlin. At present, about 30 individual programs - Graduate Schools,  Research Training Groups - are offered in a wide variety of fields.

Most of the programs are in interdisciplinary research areas.  Structured PhD programs are a mixture of some course work and individual research for the PhD dissertation. In most cases supervision of PhD students is achieved by more than one professor.

For the list of structured PhD programs please click here.

PhD studies under direct supervision of an individual professor
Generally speaking, each professor of Freie Universitaet Berlin can supervise PhD students. This is the traditional way of doing a doctorate in Germany and is also called the 'apprentice model'.

The apprentice model is a 'research only' way to do a doctorate. There is no compulsory curriculum.

At Freie Universitaet Berlin currently the vast majority of German and international PhD students perform their doctorate following this model.

As part of the Freie Universitaet Berlin - China Scholarship Council Joint Program 2012 Freie Universitaet is offering an extensive number of open positions for PhD studies under direct supervision of individual professors. Please click here to browse the list.
